TightVNC is a free open source client and server application based on VNC which is a remote-desktop-like tool that enables you to control the desktop of remote machines but with a lot more functions. Yet, it is still compatible with all VNC clients and servers as it's compatible with the RFB protocol used by VNC.
TightVNC is popular and is considered the best VNC variant due to JPEG compression that it provides and saves bandwith. Moreover it supports the video mirror driver which will transmit the remote screen modifications only saving a lot of system resources and increasing the update speed. The program features a nice stable file transfer with a progress bar. Another feature that is not found in almost all other competitive software is the support for setting a full-control and a read-only passwords and control whether keyboard and mouse events should apply to the remote computer or not. The Linux version of this software allows SSH tunneling. The viewer has options for controlling the quality of remote pictures to make the controlling process faster on low speeds or to use maximum quality for local networks. The viewer program also can listen for connections and work as a server by accepting reverse VNC connections.
